Jazz Dispensary and Pure Beauty Announce ‘The Golden Hour Experience’: An Integrated Collaboration
Los Angeles, CA (October 30, 2024)—Jazz Dispensary and Pure Beauty are excited to unveil The Golden Hour Experience, an integrated collaboration that fuses a stash of sizzling sunbaked tunes from the vaults of Jazz Dispensary and the most exceptional flower from the gardens of Pure Beauty. Expanding the universe of the upcoming RSD Black Friday compilation The Golden Hour, this collaboration introduces a cannabis strain grown on the grooves and rhythms of the album, and an immersive website experience where listeners can dive into the sonic and visual landscape of the project, watch psychedelic visualizers, learn more about the artists, and locate their nearest dispensaries to get their hands on the flower.
Grown by Pure Beauty, the strain “Golden Hour” was cultivated specifically for the release of this compilation. Chosen from hundreds of clones and seeds available, this strain embodies the full experience of the album. Now available to order from dispensaries across California, Golden Hour has a pungent flavor profile and an effect that is dreamy, cerebral and energizing—crafted to set the optimum conditions to calibrate your mind, body and soul and soak in the album. At the Pure Beauty cultivation, known for sustainable practices and award-winning top-quality indoor flower, the plants are spoken to as they grow. But for this specific strain, the album was played on a loop while the plants blossomed. A combination that has been proven to be golden over the decades, this pairing is here to remind everyone why they call it jazz cabbage.
Once the plants set the mood, the first needle drop on The Golden Hour lands on “Web,” an energizing, yet laid-back cut off pianist Hampton Hawes’ 1974 LP, Northern Windows. The recording, led by the great David Axelrod, features drums and bass by legendary session players Spider Webb and Carol Kaye, respectively. Next is “Soul Talk-1970,” the uptempo track by organist Johnny “Hammond” Smith, followed by Sonny Rollins’ funky “Newkleus.” The track, which appeared on the saxophonist’s 1975 album, Nucleus, was composed by frequently sampled R&B star James Mtume, who also delivers a heady dose of standout guitar licks. Cornetist Nat Adderley closes out the set with the hard bop–infused “Fortune’s Child,” off his 1979 album, A Little New York Midtown Music.
The breeze picks up on side B with “Cántaro,” a bold and sultry number (penned by Axelrod) off saxophonist Gene Ammons’ 1974 LP, Brasswind, followed by Vince Guaraldi’s “Little Birdie,” a hip 1973 cue for Peanuts sidekick Woodstock (and featuring a rare vocal performance by the best-selling pianist/composer). Drummer Chico Hamilton chills down the vibes with “Gengis,” a soulful and languid instrumental off his 1973 collab with Little Feat, The Master. Rounding out the album is “Suite for Albeniz,” a seductive Eastern-influenced selection from Philly fusion pioneers Catalyst, off 1976’s A Tear and a Smile.
Available exclusively at independent record stores around the world on November 29 for RSD Black Friday, the vinyl edition of The Golden Hour is pressed on dreamy blue-and-gold “Golden Wave Swirl” wax and housed in a jacket designed by acclaimed visual artist Kamil Czapiga, who used microscopic cameras to film special color inks as they reacted to songs from the album. It’s time to get lost in the weeds!
