Indica vs Sativa – Does the label really matter?

The Indica vs Sativa debate has been a topic of stoner arguments for decades. But how you perceive these traits might be all wrong 🤔

Indica vs Sativa – does it really matter?

The claims that Indica is sedating and Sativa is energizing, is really just a passed down opinion from 18th century naturalist, Jean Baptiste, so, pretty outdated! What if I told you….that every modern strain is actually a Hybrid! 🤯 Hybridization has been occurring for years, as the cannabis industry grasps for new heights. With selective breeding: different genetics, cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, etc, are all passed down to new strains. According to Dr. Ethan Russo, an expert in cannabinoid research, “The sativa/indica distinction as commonly applied in the lay literature is total nonsense and an exercise in futility. One cannot in any way currently guess the biochemical content of a given Cannabis plant based on its height, branching, or leaf morphology.” To put it simply, Sativa and Indica only tell you the physical traits of the cannabis species, not what kind of effects to expect! I think it’s important for the future of the cannabis industry to recognize this, and going forward, hopefully more producers will start to label their products based on terpene and cannabinoid profiles rather than the outdated Indica/Sativa model.

What cannabis labels should focus on instead of indica vs sativa

While we all would love to rely on these titles to tell us how a certain strain will make us feel, it’s simply not that simple. Terpenes are rarely talked about, but they need to be. For example, if a strain causes you to feel sleepy, it’s most likely because it has a higher content of a terpene known as Myrcene, not because it’s an Indica. The same applies to the more energetic effects of some strains, being high in a terpene called Limonene, not because it’s a sativa. During your next store visit, it won’t hurt to ask your budtenders what terpenes are present in the strains you’re buying! If you’re in Illinois, try a company called @crescolabs , who I believe are doing away with Indica and Sativa labels, and are focusing on effects based labeling! Happy Monday, and as always, stay high! #indica #sativa #doesntmatter #weedscience #cannabiscommunity #themoreyouknow #knowledgeispower #weed
