Barbary Coast Cannabis Lounge Hosts Meet the Farmers Event
Every now and then I’ll see Instagram posts about farmers making the drive down from the Emerald Triangle to participate in Meet the Farmer events at dispensaries in the city. I’d never made it to one, and as fate would have it – Barbary Coast’s 5/26/23 Meet the Farmers event was right en route for me after my final California Naturalist class. I made it! And let me say that I’m very glad I did.
Brands: Ventoso Farms, Mendocino Family Farms, Martyjuana, Lovingly & Legally, Perrin Family Farms
Dispensary/Consumption Lounge: Barbary Coast
Barbary Coast is a cannabis dispensary and also a cannabis consumption lounge located right in San Francisco. The lounge itself had booths on one side and a long bench on the other – along this bench and along the window to the street, five brands from up north were set up to answer questions about their products.

I got checked in at the front desk then made my way back to the lounge for the Meet the Farmers event. I met Ventoso Farms for the first time, which had a nice Pistachio cultivar (review here) they were demoing. It was Limonene dominant, and this along with the secondary and tertiary terpenes were called out front and center. More brands need to present this information, and also explain it in person to consumers and budtenders. To say it’s impactful is an understatement. Mendocino Family Farms was right next to them, and Phil let me try a freshly rolled joint. This was a consumption lounge after all. Next to him was Marty Clein with Martyjuana who was talking with Jose who works at Barbary Coast. Marty was explaining what a hugelkulture was while we enjoyed some of his Supreme Gelato. Besides cannabis, he’s also got this coloring book for adults. Stay tuned for how trippy this becomes. Next to Marty was Susan and Paul from Loving & Legally – notably not a farm but a processor that had an ethanol based topical. Their booth is very educational with images and descriptions of CB1 and CB2 receptors, phytocannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system. It’s very important for cannabis users to understand how it is that they get high or feel relief (or a return to homeostasis), and that there are products which can provide cannabis relief without any psychoactive effect. Furthermore, local topical application to target pain is actually possible, too. Perrin Family Farm was the fifth and final booth which looked beautiful in contrast to the bustling urbane but mundane scene in the window behind. For some minutes, I was able to step in off the street – ignore the sounds of the city – and immerse myself in education with regenerative farmers that are growing cannabis sustainably. Kudos to Barbary Coast for hosting such an event and to everybody that made the long drive to come down. Next time, I’m bringing more people. For the average dispo goer that isn’t yet considering taking a trip up north, events like this are a primo opportunity to talk with the person that grew your cannabis. To know that person, and see their personality and care shine in the flower that you’re smoking – that is a true cannabis culture experience.Founder of The Highest Critic
