Hey what’s up everyone? Figured I’d take a minute to get back to some local flavor. This one I’ve been meaning to get this review out as well the past month but, with the craziness of everything going on, it has taken me a little longer than planned. Nonetheless, on one of my more recent visits home I got the word of some sour floating around. When I learned this particular sour going around was Karma Genetics’ cut of Sour Diesel BX2 harvested by Boutique it was a no brainer to try out. Boutique has been one of those who has been honing in on his craft in the Central Mass. area for some time now. If you want to see for yourself, scroll down the page and check out some of the earlier reviews I did on his content awhile back. Now, as far as this cultivar goes, this is what you call somewhat of a myth nowadays. Well, not if you know the right person but that’s another story for another time. Not to sound like the majority, but let’s be honest, real sour is tough to come by now. Not like the days when I was in early high school when everyone and their moms had it at different grades. Even when I got to college, I feel like sour was become more mythical as the years went on. Now that I had finally gotten my hands on some, I was eager to see how those gaseous notes of chem, diesel, and pine would come out. Not to mention the distinct aftertaste of lemons, it’s not hard to tell I was extra excited for this one. Before I forget, Karma Genetics Sour Diesel BX2 features a cross between Karma Sour D 2007 and Karma Sour D BX1. Let’s waste no more time and get into the facts!
Breaking into the buds gave way to a thick, oily residue that became smeared in my hands as I broke up beneath my fingertips. It also gave way to some absurdly thick stems within the interior of this bud which was probably my only gripe about this cultivar. The odor present upon broken open was strong, exhibiting powerful notes of fuel and sour lemons. The lemon back end was rather sharp as I also noticed lingering terps of pine in floral within the undertones of the overall smell. The texture as well as the consistency of the buds remained great while breaking the Sour up. Once doing so, the fuel smell amplified as the grounded up buds gave off a smell almost identical to lemon Pine Sol, giving a light back end of pine and floral. The dry pull on the joint had that same concoction of both lemon and fuel with gassy flavor of burnt rubber that complimented the all-around savoriness of this cultivar.
When I sparked the Sour Diesel BX2 in an Element paper, the initial inhales were smooth and gassy from the very start. This cut had super citrusy notes of lemons and grapefruit once you got a few pulls in that carried a simple, yet unique, flavor. The more I pulled on the joint a sour, oily flavor that started to penetrate the walls early with terp stains. On the way out, the notes of burnt rubber on the exhales were captured with great clarity. It also resonated the oil in the joint with a taste for those lemon fuel terps. A little ways into the sesh, the sour taste on most inhales became more evident.
Additionally, it was easy to hone in on the combination of diesel and chem notes that made the smoke exceptionally gassy for this cultivar.
Upon receiving the Sour Diesel BX2 from Boutique, it came sealed up in a traditional ziplock bag which was tossed in a brown paper bag for good measure. As I proceeded to open up the bag to get a whiff, my initial thoughts on the nose was “wow, that’s a lot of highway tar and burnt rubber.” As I inched closer, I gained a little bit of earth and pine aromas too. The smell when this cultivar was in solid form was what you would expect: simple and indicative. The appearance of it out of the bag gave you those archaic vibes as well. A mix of pale and Forest green hues made up the primarily colorways on these bristly, prickly buds. The shriveled up, darker sugar leaves were pointed and stood upwards. Scattered red pistils wrapped around in certain areas on these medium-to-large sized nugs that made up the half. At first, the triche coverage comprised on each bud wasn’t the most overwhelming, but the crystals on each bud became a lot more appearance once being place under the mag jar. After I picked up a couple of them the stickiness on each one was evident as the fat, spade-like buds tickled the palms of my hands due to the texture.
Within about 45 minutes to an hour after the onset of effects my thoughts became exceptionally drifty while my legs felt like soup. Personally, I liked indulging in this one either at night or first thing waking up on the weekends when there wasn’t any immediate plans. This cultivar came in handy for post-workouts or any other type or physical activity as well. While some of the mental effects wore off with time, I still felt a strong melting sensation in my legs for the two hours (plus) in which the medicinal effects lasted. All in all, I thought the high this cultivar provided was exceptional rounding out the overall experience in a positive way.
After having a chance to try the Sour BX2 that was cultivated by Boutique, I have to say that this had to be one of the more impressive offerings I’ve had from him over the course of time. As tough as it can be to get your hands on some good sour nowadays I felt as if this landed in my lap at the perfect time. As mentioned above, I believe this cut of sour really dialed in on some of those features that made the experience rather nostalgic. That started with the overall appearance and smell the Sour BX2 showcased. I think it goes without saying that if you are the type that can’t get past the smell of burnt rubber or lemon citrus notes of fuel without trying, you’ll be in for a treat with this one. Additionally, if you are a smoker who favors a more traditional terp profile while still getting that added power from each pull, this cut of sour will be certainly appeal to you. Particularly if you are someone who is chasing memories from the past this cultivar will help you reminisce. On top of that, the effects were extremely favorable, dishing out equal mix of both head and body effects. The Sour BX2 will work wonders in those times you are looking for a great deal of lower body relief while, at the same time, obtaining a mildly crippling high for a night in. I wholeheartedly believe this cultivar is on that everyone should re-try at least once. I wanted to thank Boutique for getting this in my hands to review. The taste of lemons on this one stuck to the roof my mouth for the duration of the first half of the sesh. Overall, this cultivar culminated in an excellent burn that went at an extremely even pace. Ultimately, this resulted in a lighter grey ash with periodic white steaks along with a thick terp drip that circled the perimeter of the joint.
Diving into the second half of the sesh, I discovered an infusion between sweet/sour fuel notes and piney, chem notes. This taste fed off a tremendous amount of sour grapefruit flavor, tickling my tongue at the moment. The flavor of lemon fuel also resonated and continued to remain strong as I moved into the later stages of the sesh. Pulls remained fairly gassy but a little bit of power was lost amongst each one. The exhales remained pretty constant throughout the course of the sesh. The notes of burnt rubber continued to linger on the back of my breath continuing to cast notes of chem and pine on each follow through. Personally, I thought the flavor on the Sour Diesel BX2 thrived even when the joint when down to the wire. The overall experience of smoking this did feel as if you walked into a time capsule and turned the clocks about 15 years back. The simple terps, packed with tons of clarity and flavor, really helped this particular cut of Sour Diesel BX2 stand out even amongst some of the newer genetics you see floating around today.
The medicinal effects that followed as a result from smoking the Sour Diesel BX2 were very effective and did not take long ignite. The first couple times smoking this, the head rush that is created within the first 10-15 minutes in the sesh caused beads of sweat to form on my forehead. In turn, I developed quite intense cerebral effects within the the first 30 minutes from onset. Although my overall perception remained in tact, for the most part, I began to wander out in space from time to time before pulling myself back to earth. Within a little bit, I also noticed an intense tingly sensation running through my thighs and legs making them a bit wobbly. This feeling provided a considerable amount of relief and felt relaxing while sitting down.
