Hey what’s up everyone? Have you missed me? I know it’s been a minute but I am back today to bring you a review from one of my local favorites, Pax Genetics. Over the past few months I’ve been smoking a lot of repeats that I’ve already reviewed on the page along with some new flavors to keep the palette fresh. As a lot of you also may know I ended up getting married this past April. I appreciate everyone and all who reached out and wished me well. Today, I will be diving into the third pheno of Red Congo x Garlic Breath. This one came about after Pax used his Red Congo female to pollinate it with Freak Genetics’ male Garlic Breath. Originally bred by Freak Genetics and, then, cultivated by Pax, I was actually quite interested in trying this one. Prior to this, I had never heard of nor tried Red Congo, although every time I have tried Garlic Breath it has usually slapped. Without question, I expected this cultivar to be on the greasy side. However, shoutout to Freak Genetics who played his part in making this cultivar happen. As I am also a Worcester native myself, it’s always a treat to get my hands on some locally produce bud. Let’s waste no more time and get into the facts!
The Red Congo x Garlic Breath was received in one of Pax trademarked bags that came with the removable seal on top. Upon opening it up, an intense, raunchy skunk smell permeated the airwaves. Additionally, I picked up on some citrusy, pine-like undertones given out by the overall scent. Simply put, this cultivar reeked. Looking into the bag sparked promise as I laid eyes on chunky nugs that showed off luscious, yellow-green hues with tiny spots of purple mixed into its structure. Bright orange pistils in abundance along with a decent covering of triches polished off the above average appearance of this cultivar. As I proceeded to take a couple nugs out of the bag, I became more familiar with the hand trim they possessed as each one was relatively large in size. This cultivar consisted of a bristly texture and felt rather dense when holding in hand. However, when I began to crack one open I felt a soft, crispier interior as I broke through. Not to confuse this with airy texture as this bud was not airy in the least. The raunchiness from the smell intensified upon breaking the buds open. During this stage, I honed in on loads of pine and distinguished garlic terps. Breaking down this cultivar by hand was the easiest route and produced an incredible yield. The smell didn’t alter too much from what was present in solid nug form. I still received a heavy dosage of pine that particularly brought out an odor of evergreen that made the Red Congo x Garlic Breath exceptionally gassy during this time. When I went to take a dry pull from the joint, a lot of flavor was indicative of what was presented in the nose. A loom of smoky pine and lemon coated my mouth accompanied by an aftertaste of evergreen and garlic.
Additionally, a sweet, but gassy, backend of pepper hit me as I reached the later stages in the sesh. In the later stages the gassiness of this cultivar levels out a bit more while a minor loss in taste occurs. All in all, smoking the Red Congo x Garlic Breath #3 really grew on me after smoking it a handful of time. This came in clutch at the time as I was looking for something with a gassier appeal. Overall, a decent smoke that led to fairly potent high.
The medicinal effects that ensued after smoking the Red Congo x Garlic Breath quickly impacted me, bringing about a melting sensation that started near my shoulders and chest, working it’s way downwards within the first 15-20 minutes. Immediately around the halfway point in the sesh is when my eyes started to water up from the pressure. Although this didn’t provoke any coughing, I felt as if each pull built up a considerable amount of pressure behind my eyes, cheeks, and nose. As this provided physical relief within my muscles over the course of the first half hour, I did get energetic, cerebral effects as well. This hit my temple concurrently while melting sensation hit my body. Under the influence of this cultivar I found it relatively easy to keep my ideas collected as well as holding conversations with others. Over the course of the next half hour, my body felt extremely relaxed although, at times, I felt compelled to go out on a nature walk to experience the medicinal value. This cultivar did a great job bringing out a positive, upbeat personality out of myself. In addition to that, it also assisted with creativity as I was capable of challenging my critical thinking skills. The effects started to wear off around two hours or so after their onset. Keep in mind, my tolerance has shrunk a bit over the past few months as my smoking has been limited to more certain times. Overall, I was satisfied with the medicinal qualities the Red Congo x Garlic Breath #3 presented as it proved to be fairly potent.
After having a chance to try the Red Congo x Garlic Breath #3 by Pax, I thought the all-around experience was good. The funkiness of this cultivar coming out of the jar inspired hope from the start. The stunning appearance of light green and triches as well as a fresh hand-trim gave the buds an enticing look. Anyone who favors a raunchy, gassy smoke would probably think twice before passing this up based off the smell and appearance alone. Getting into the smoke, there were some mixed qualities about this one. While the gassy flavors of lemon, garlic and pine really defined this cultivars’ terp profile, I did think there were certain periods throughout the sesh where the smoke was harsher than others. Nonetheless, this still proved to be enjoyable and hit the palette with moderate-to-above average strength. Where some parts of the smoke lacked, the medicinal effects made up for. The Red Congo x Garlic Breath #3 brought about a medicinal value that was quite balanced. If you are someone who is looking for physical relief while, at the same time, remaining coherent and refreshed in thought this will be ideal for the occasion. Personally, I thought this was good, not great. Also, I believe I’ve had more favorable experience from other cultivars Pax has offered even though this still managed to do the trick. I appreciate the love and will more than likely have something up from his upcoming drop in the near future.
When I sparked the Red Congo x Garlic Breath #3 in an Element paper, the initial inhales provided a rather simple flavor even though they were packed with gas from the very start. Notes of Skunk, fuel and garlic brushed through my lungs. This cultivar also put out an incredibly piney profile in the early stages of the sesh. The exhales somewhat matched what I received from the inhales with an overall mustier taste. By the time I got a quarter of the way into the sesh, the pine terps were heavily settled in. The more and more I pulled this one in I got a garlic, baked cheddar-tasting inhale. The cultivar left a raunchy taste on my breath and a manger to leave a potent stench in the air. For the most part, the pulls were smooth and not as pressuresome as I expected upon my first impressions. In addition to this, the exhales exhibited a more floral/citrus taste once I got a little deeper into the sesh. Nearing the halfway point is when the notes of burnt rubber and lemon began to kick in. The burn on the joint was on the salt-n-pepper side as some pulls ended up being a little more harsh than others. Nonethless, I don’t think this managed to take away too much from the overall quality of smoke this cultivar provided. Moving into the second half of the sesh, the notes of burnt rubber and lemon remained consistent as well as the garlic terps, which made a comeback, feeding off lingering features. I remember, at this stage, the taste was oddly familiar to these Lemon Garlic wings I used to get at now-closed operation called Wing It Up in Worcester. For some reason, as I kept taking more pulls at this point it reminded me of this fond snack I used to have in college.
