Are CO2 extracts solventless?

@tonytonytonytonytonytony99 asks: Is co2 a solvent? Fantastic question! Are CO2 extracts solventless or solvent based? With the variety of different cannabis extraction methods in today’s market, distinguishing between them can be difficult! Co2 is probably one of my favorite extractions because it’s safer than BHO (butane hash oil).

Are CO2 extracts solventless?

To answer Tony’s question, co2 doesn’t naturally act like a solvent. However, once it is exposed to temperature and pressure, that all changes! This is called co2’s supercritical state, where it lands somewhere in between a gas, liquid, and a solid, turning it into an effective solvent! Besides being safer than BHO extraction, co2 is more readily available since co2 exists within every living organism. Co2 can be used in most waxes, shatters, resins, and even edibles! The process of creating a co2 extraction is not something that can easily be done at home however, and takes a decent amount of lab equipment and training.
