Wok Cannabis Cultivar (Strain) Review
Hey what’s up everyone? I hope you all are gearing up for an awesome Super Bowl Sunday! Today, I have a big debut for a brand I did not expect to personally reach out to me to review. I’m sure a lot of you on here are wondering why I haven’t been dabbling in the “bigger” name brands out there as of the past 6 months or so. With a focus on saving as well as networking with some of the local talent out here has somewhat deterred me from some of these bigger, flashier brands in the game. Nonetheless, this review will switch it up a bit. Founded back in 2018 in LA, Trufflez has established its self as a brand with creative marketing through detailed artwork as well as boasting a long line of flavors. Trufflez has also been noted for having a moderate presence in music industry, more specifically their recent collab with Moneybagg Yo. In addition to all of this, I noticed they have recently launched an NFT so it’s safe to say that Trufflez pitches itself as a brand that is much larger than just weed itself. Personally, I have not seen too much of this brand since 2021 but after their local rep, Trufflez Boston, reached out I was interested to find out more about them. After offering up a few eighths to sample on the house he was eager to gain my honest opinion on some of their newest flavors. The first review will dive into Wok by Trufflez. He was eager to show me the buds in advance and gave me insight on some of the growing process, such as the month-to-two cure they give each cultivar upon completion of the growing process. Since Trufflez does not share information on their genetics to gain full ownership on their seeds I, unfortunately, was unable to obtain the lineage on the Wok. Let’s waste no more time and get into the facts! The Wok by Trufflez was presented in a precise die-cut mylar packaging with a white matte printing material on the front display. Personally, packaging doesn’t typically over overwhelm me or serve as a priority for purchase although I will say the design on the Wok bag was a cut above most things you see out there between both the rec and traditional markets. The die-cut bag was shaped with a styrofoam cup (which Wok is commonly held in) that made its way bottom up to a larger shape up top which displayed the trademark Trufflez mascot popping out of the top. When in hand, it felt as if I were holding an ice cream cone although it didn’t pose any challenges when taking the bud out, defeating my prior distaste for this particular shaped bag. From the tiny purple drops of syrup, to the bloodshot eyes on the mascot, and even the ice cubes coming out of the cup of syrup, the packaging for the Wok went to great lengths to exhibit detail. Additionally, the colorway blends nicely together two. Two things that particularly impressed me about the bag were the matte packaging which is extremely childproof and that it came sealed ahead of time. The seal on the back was neat and came with a dog bone-shaped zipper that you pull in order to open. Overall, great touch on the marketing with this one. Upon opening the seal on the Wok, my first impression of the nose on this cultivar was a pungent aroma of sour cherries. This also held a thick creamy, candied bubblegum scent which made believe highly this cultivar was of the Zkittles/Runtz variety. The more I dug into the smell the Wok fed off, I arrived to more piney, almond notes on the back end. Looking at them while in the bag reveled the mixture of lighter green hues with interwoven patches of faded purple. This was under a considerable amount of white trichromes as the darker red pistils remained intact. I was actually surprised of this because, upon taking the buds out of the bag, they seemed a little too compressed from transport. A couple even had a whole side completely pancaked which made it a little more difficult than normal for photos. The three larger nugs that made up the eighth had a Jada Pinkett bald trim on them and were considerably dense in weight. The texture on them was prickly with a hollowed outer surface when trying to break into them. When breaking the buds apart, they displayed a mildly sandy/kiefy output which exhibited more of those cherry and fruit punch notes with a looming overtone of candy. After a few seconds passed, I also noticed Orange creamsicle notes that took me by surprise. Upon breaking through the nugs, the texture became softer which made it efficient to break down by hand or in the grinder. However, the yield wasn’t the greatest due to the overly sandy texture of it once broken down, leaving a mild kief residue on my fingers. At this stage, I got more of a gelato smell with the fruity floral notes meeting the piney, nutty aromas that gave this cultivar a more earthy, yet gassy, nose here. The dry pull on the joint consisted of both tropical fruit terps and almonds initially giving it a creamy taste that evolved into a gassier taste with a perplexed taste of guava. When I sparked the Wok in an Element paper, the first handful of pulls culminate in an ultra fruity taste giving off notes of cherries, oranges and grapes. When I got right around a quarter of the way into the sesh, a soapy taste began to develop giving off notes of dark z mixed in with the grape berry flavor. Each pulled managed to be a little gassier than the one prior as some pulls resonated a thick pine back end. On the way out, I would retain the same soapy taste omitted on the inhale but with carbonated citrus terps that resembled an overall taste of sour candy. Additionally, I could sense a hint of burnt rubber on my tongue from the gasinessess released through each exhale. Early on, the taste was super delectable and that mix of candy and soap seemed to power the sesh. Once you move closer to the midway point, the pulls became even gassier. Personally, I thought some of the pulls got a little too harsh at moments, cutting my throat but not in a good way. Nonethless, the creamy soapiness in the flavor remained as I honed in on very faint notes of Chem amongst the oil rigs in the joint. The burn on the joint was impeccable and ensued in a lighter grey ash with a mildly sweaty terp ring surrounding it. As I moved into the second half of the sesh, the pulls remained potent in regards to the gasiness. I still was pulling in dark berry z terps while a distinct orange taste I once felt through the nose of this cultivar was clearly detectable. This, in turn, gave the overall flavor subtle hints of sweetness amongst the heavy soapy terps the Wok fed off. The exhales also continued to display increasingly soapier notes, blending in a splash of creamy bubblegum on the back end. I also want to point out that the soap taste within each pull became spicier than the one previous. Getting down to the wire, much of the flavor died off out of nowhere leaving me with rubbery notes of sour grapes and an early extinguish on the joint. Although this was a disappointing ending to a great tasting profile, I think the overall experience smoking the Wok was a positive one. I was warned ahead of time that this was good day smoke, which it was, so there weren’t too many surprises concerning the medicinal effects the Wok provided. The onset of them was felt a little past the halfway mark in the sesh as some of the pressuresome pulls forced me teary-eyed. My sinuses kicked up on this one as well as a result of the coughing from the gassiness. The first 20-25 minutes began with incredible heady effects as my mind was racing and experiencing a mild paranoia that came over. On the other hand, I remained quite relaxed as far as the body effects were concerned. Those took a little longer to kick in, however, this cultivar proved to be good for those aching joints and muscles. Going further into the onset effects this allowed me to enter my creative space and did serve as a quintessential day smoke. This cultivar also enabled me to be very quick-witted in conversations and other social situations. In addition to that, I typically was able to stay on high-alert if needed while off the effects of this cultivar while, at the same time, getting to feel the mild melting sensation put out from the medicinal effects of the Wok. About an hour into the sesh is when I feltcthe peak of those body effects take shape. However, this served well during the day whether it came to performing a task that required critical thinking, getting together with friends, engaging in physical activity/sports, or even buckling down and writing a review. When it was said and done the effects from the Wok lasted between an hour and half to two hours, boasting a fair amount of potency as well. I thought the medicinal effects from this cultivar were one of the highlight features it offered, in turn, making the high favorable. After having a chance to finally try the Wok by Trufflez for myself, I thought it was more on the enjoyable side of things although I can’t say it is something I’d go out on a limb and seek at a rate of $65/eighth. While this cultivar did pack it’s fair share of quality, I don’t think I could personally succumb to a price tag of due to the compression the buds experienced in transport, the bald trim (which takes away from the extra goodness a cultivar provides), and the flavor loss at the end of the sesh. However, this is not to cast shade because there is still a lot to desire and will most likely get better the more it’s dialed in. First off, if you are a collector or fan of packaging, the quality Trufflez is putting out on the marketing end is superb. Between the nose you obtain on the Wok in each phase as well as the terp profile this displayed, these had to be among the most prominent characteristics of this cultivar. If you are a fan of candy, dark z, or any type of z for that matter you will be tempted to try this one. Additionally, this cultivar possessed enough gassiness where you’re going to get a pretty good kick while tasting those flavors too. To top that off, the medicinal effects were great especially during those times where I needed a boost through the day. I can’t leave out that the service/engagement from Trufflez Boston was above par too. I appreciate the samples they were able to provide and look forward to giving you a follow up on their Purple Trufflez come next review.Check out more reviews by @toptierterpsma on Instagram!
